FLORIDA GEOGRAPHIC DATA LIBRARY DOCUMENTATION

TITLE: GENERALIZED RECHARGE TO AND DISCHARGE FROM THE FLORIDAN AQUIFER SYSTEM

Geodataset Name: RECHARG_DEC03
Geodataset Type: SHAPEFILE
Geodataset Feature: Polygon
Feature Count: 58
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Generalized recharge to and discharge from the Floridan Aquifer System. This layer covers the entire state of Florida. Aquifers are underground layers of rock and sand that hold water. These layers are made up of loosely packed sediments and layers of calcium-rich limestone and dolomite. In Florida, most of the population depends on the Upper Floridan aquifer for their drinking water. The Upper Floridan aquifer, which is the largest aquifer in the state, holds the ground water like a sponge. Holes in the rock that makes up the aquifer allow the water to move freely through it. The Upper Floridan aquifer stretches for 100,000 square miles beneath Florida and parts of Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina. This is an update to the recharg layer.

USER NOTES:
The final product was checked against the source material. The Mapping and GIS section
of the Southwest Florida Water Management District corrected any errors found.
There are no significant omissions.
GeoPlan relied on the integrity of the attribute information within
the original data.
The Southwest Florida Water Management District (District) manages the water resources for
west-central Florida as directed by state law. The District encompasses roughly 10,000
square miles in all or part of 16 counties and serves a population of more than 5 million
people. The goal of the District is to meet the water needs of current and future water
users while protecting and preserving the water resources within its boundaries.

This data layer illustrates the generalized recharge and discharge from the Floridian Aquifer System.
This is used for resource management and cartographic purposes.

No formal accuracy assessment was completed. This map should be used for
regional cartographic purposes only.

This data is provided 'as is' and its vertical positional accuracy
has not been verified by GeoPlan

These data were not collected under the supervision of a licensed Professional Surveyor
and Mapper. Use of these data requires a general understanding of GIS.

The Florida Geographic Data Library is a collection of Geospatial Data
compiled by the University of Florida GeoPlan Center with support from
the Florida Department of Transportation. GIS data available in FGDL is
collected from various state, federal, and other agencies (data sources)
who are data stewards, producers, or publishers. The data available in
FGDL may not be the most current version of the data offered by the
data source. University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no guarantees
about the currentness of the data and suggests that data users check
with the data source to see if more recent versions of the data exist.

Furthermore, the GIS data available in the FGDL are provided 'as is'.

A note about data scale:

Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets
are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes.
Please be sure you are using the best available data.

1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
county level.
1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such
as property parcel boundaries.
1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
multi-county or regional level.
1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
regional or state level or larger.

Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be
considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data
before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been
made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional
information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact
section of this documentation. For more information regarding
scale and accuracy, see our webpage at:

DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:
The source map was tied down on a digitizing board using nine county-corner tics within
the State of Florida as control points. The features were digitized using ArcEdit and
topology was generated using the ArcInfo BUILD or CLEAN command. Attribute items were a
added to the feature attribute tables and the appropriate attribute updated using ArcEdit.
Process Date: 19941001

In November and December 2003, an enterprise geodatabase was designed and implemented. Coverages were converted into feature classes using ArcCatalog 8.3. The feature classes were created new in a feature dataset, with column names, shape type, grid size, and projection information defined during creation. An X/Y Domain and Precision were set at MinX: -700,000; MinY: 2,000,000; Precision: 1000. Z-Values were set at MinZ: -20; Precision: 1000. The Grid Tile Size is 2,147,483.465. Data was then loaded into the feature classes from the coverages using the 'Load Data' tool in ArcCatalog 8.3. Indexes were created for attributes when there were more than 100 records in the data set. Topology and attributes were validated whenever possible. Positional Accuracy for topology rules used for positional validation. The following Topology Rules were created and validated for the feature classes in the Recharge feature dataset: Florida Recharge regions must not overlap. Florida Recharge boundaries must not self-overlap. Florida Recharge boundaries must be covered by boundary of Florida Recharge regions. Florida Recharge regions must be covered by Florida Recharge boundaries. The Cluster Tolerance was defined to be 0.005 meters. Any errors that were found were inspected and corrected using ArcMap 8.3. Process Date: 20031205
GeoPlan Center Process Steps: Geoplan downloaded the data from the SWWMD's GIS data website (http://www.swfwmd.state.fl.us/data/gis/layer_library/) on January 28, 2011. The data downloaded was in shapefile format packaged together in a zip file called flrecharge.exe. The shapefile was extracted and originally named: FLORIDANRECHARGE The data was in the following projection: NAD_1983_HARN_StatePlane_Florida_West_FIPS_0902_Feet The following tasks were undertaken: - Reprojected to the FGDL Albers NAD83 HARN projection. - All records were uppercased. - Changed original layer name from FLORIDANRECHARGE to RECHARG_DEC03 . - Dropped the OBJECTID, SHAPE.AREA, and SHAPE.LEN fields. - Added the DESCRIPT field based on FLORIDANRE - Added the FGDLAQDATE based on the date GeoPlan acquired the data from the source Process Date: 20110203
Data imported to ArcSDE and exported as a shapefile. Process Date: 20110214
