FLORIDA GEOGRAPHIC DATA LIBRARY DOCUMENTATION
VERSION 2003, RELEASED NOVEMBER, 2002.
TITLE: STRATEGIC HABITAT AND CONSERVATION AREAS
Geodataset Name: SHCA Geodataset Type: SHAPE Geodataset Feature: POLYGON
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This dataset contains Strategic Habitat and Conservation Areas. Areas important to flora, fauna, and natural communities are represented as determined by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The areas identify the particular species of wildlife predicted to occur for that location.

USER NOTES:
A note concerning data scale: Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modelling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data. 1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:250000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger. Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analyses. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation. For more information regarding scale and accuracy, see our web pages at: http://www.geoplan.ufl.edu/education.html
FGDL QUALITY ASSURANCE STATUS:
-Reprojected data to FGDL Albers HPGN (See "Map Projection Parameters" below) -Upcased all character records -Added DESCRIPT item based on SPECIES1 -Dropped old internal coverage items: Shca_, Shca_ID

DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:
This dataset was originally created by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission in September 2000. In 2002, the GeoPlan Center downloaded this data in shapefile format from the Southwest Florida Water Management District website: http://www.swfwmd.state.fl.us/data/gis/shape_search.htm. When received, the data was in UTM zone 17 projection, Datum: NAD83, Spheroid: GRS1980, Units: meters. The data was reprojected to FGDL Albers HPGN, DESCRIPT item added based on SPECIES1, lowercase characters within attribute table were upcased and old internal coverage items: Shca_ and Shca_ID were dropped. The dataset's prior history from SWFWMD is as follows: This dataset was originally created by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission as an ArcInfo Grid layer with a grid resolution of 100 meters. The grid was obtained by SWFWMD and converted to a coverage in ArcInfo using the arc command GRIDPOLY with a weed tolerance of zero. Attribute item GRID-CODE was modified to VALUE and a JOINITEM was done with the .vat table to the .pat table using the attribute item VALUE. The .vat was joined so that the species number and species type for each polygon would be displayed. In ArcEdit, polygons were selected for attribute item VALUE not equal to zero. The PUT command was then used to create a new coverage, so that background or no data polygons were removed as much as possible. The item SHCAFLAG was added to the polygon attribute table and polygons were designated as SH (strategic habitat) or NU (null). The item VALUE was then removed from the attribute table. The fuzzy tolerance was set at 0.001 and topology created using the BUILD command. The coverage was then converted to the current shapefile data model.
